I got a call from the Gallup Independent to cover the 2010 State Softball Tournament this weekend. They were covering the state baseball tournament in Albuquerque and the Arizona state track meet in Phoenix, they needed a local photog for the softball, and I fit the bill.

For the first day of the tournament, I was originally assigned to photograph Gallup vs Sandia, Miyamura vs St. Michael’s and Navajo Prep vs Pecos, but that quickly changed. Navajo Prep was dropped and Rehoboth vs Estancia on Friday night was added. They were also working a story on the Hatch Valley and Laguna Acoma coaches, who are related and had recently lost a loved one, so I shot a few action shots and the emotional ending of that game.

I wish I could have seen more of the Estancia-Rehoboth matchup, but with 8:00 PM start time, and a 9:00 PM deadline for pictures, I didn’t get to stick around for more than two innings.

For the second day, the only Gallup area team that advanced was Rehoboth, who fell in the semifinals to Loving, the eventual state champ in Class A-AA.
